Electricity is a nice thing to have in a camper. Suppose you didn't want it, then you just would have gone ahead and bought yourself a tent. Sometimes the campground loses power, and sometimes you aren't anywhere near power at all. In this case, the best solution to the power problem is to go get a generator. What generator should you get though, that is the question that we are here to answer for you. For this article, we will be looking at 10kw generators exclusively, so if you need another type, we have other lists to help with those.
We have found that the best 10kw generators are the Durostar DS10000E Gas Powered 10000 Watt Electric Start Portable Generator. We also have the Westinghouse WGen9500DF Dual Fuel Portable Generator-9500 Rated 12500 Peak Watts Gas or Propane Powered-Electric Start-Transfer Switch & RV Ready, and finally, the DuroMax XP4850EH Dual Fuel Portable Generator. These are all available on Amazon, and for the wattage, we feel that they were well priced. These could also all be placed in the back of a truck for transportation when traveling.
Here at RV Life and Living, we have more than just generator lists. We are dedicated to helping you with full-time RV living. The Durostar DS10000E Gas Powered 10000 Watt Electric Start Portable Generator is all around a great ten thousand watt generator. Made from metal with a stable exterior and wheels for easy portability, I find that this is a great choice for camping. The engine in this is strong and turns out enough power that I think is ideal for running a trailer. But what makes these worthwhile? Well, we are going to answer that with a breakdown of all the components that make this a worthwhile generator.
Producing ten thousand volts of electricity is no easy feat, so the engine on your generator will have to be sufficient for the task. The Durostar DS10000E Gas Powered 10000 Watt Electric Start Portable Generator has just such an engine. This engine is an eighteen horsepower, four-hundred and forty cc engine that can easily supply the ten thousand surge watts. The engine is so strong that this engine's average running watts are eight thousand or 8000. That is a lot of power for any generator, but it is great if you intend to use it for a camper or RV.
Suppose that you have a huge fifth wheel with dual a/c's inside. A generator with eight-thousand running watts will let you run both of those without tripping the power limit and shutting off the generator. On the other hand, if you have a trail with only one ac, you could probably run the trailer a/c and the trailer's interior with no problems at all. You can see now why we are looking at the ten thousand watt generators for this article.
Most trailers, campers, and RVs will have either a thirty amp plug or a fifty amp plug. The amp number depends on the trailer's size and what it has inside that it is powering. These items will range from lights to air-conditioning to the kitchen appliances in the trailer or RV you live in.
This generator comes with four plugs, and all four will be useful, but two of them more so than the others. The first useful plug is going to be the fifty amp plug. These will be especially helpful if you are using larger fifth wheels or class A or B busses that will draw in a lot of power for the convinces they have. The second most useful is going to be the thirty amp plug. The thirty amp plug is more often used for smaller RVs like travel trailers or teardrops because these RVs have far fewer items in them to draw the amounts of power that a fifth wheel or bus does. The fact that both of these are present shows good for sight for the manufacturer and is incredibly convent for us as the buyers of the generator.
Were are not going to spend that much time talking about how or why this generator must be made from metal. It is just important to know that it is and that there are benefits in it for you. The first benefit is that life happens. Because of that, you are going to want a generator that can handle some punishment. Hurricanes, downpours, earthquakes are things that we go to be aware of and are things that we may need this generator back us upon. Plus, if this generator can survive any number of natural disasters, it can handle the ultimate test, kids, and pets.
In addition to this overall great construction, other features are worth looking at before we move on. The first is that the windings inside of the Motor are made out of copper. This type of metal is more efficient for the generator and power production in general. The second that there is an MX2 booster that is built into the generator. This boost makes the generator more efficient and allows for greater electricity amounts to be pushed through your RV outlets. This design makes it so it can either be a 120vt generator or a 240vt generator or both at the same time.
So this generator comes with a complete control board, and I do mean complete control board. This board has a voltmeter for measuring your voltage output. It has an MX2 switch, which is the booster control for the generator. It has an AC breaker, a dc charging point, an idle control. The board even has a low oil sensor so that you don't have to worry about guessing how long you have until you finish up your remains fuel or until you have to refill it.
How portable is this generator? Well, it is not super light by any means. The weight officially listed is two-hundred and sixty pounds, that the weigh of a person. Since this is a substantial generator, it has built-in wheels that allow you to roll it wherever it needs to go. This setup is good if you have a truck and are staying in a campground. It would probably take a bit more work if you were boondocking and not feasible if you only have a car.
Westinghouse WGen9500DF Dual Fuel Portable Generator-9500 Rated 12500 Peak Watts Gas or Propane Powered-Electric Start-Transfer Switch & RV Ready

The Westinghouse WGen9500DF Dual Fuel Portable Generator-9500 Rated 12500 Peak Watts Gas, or Propane Powered-Electric Start-Transfer Switch & RV Ready is the next generator on our list. This generator is different from the last entry on the list as it is a duel fuel 10kw generator that can serve as either a 120vt generator or a 240vt generator. But there are a lot of reasons why you may want to look into this generator rather than one of the others on this list.
So the duel fuel engine that the Westinghouse WGen9500DF uses to produce its 10kw is a sturdy 457cc, 4-stroke engine from Westinghouse. This workhorse allows you to have the multi-voltage output that makes this useful for RVs. This engine allows for 240vt maximum production to let you run a significantly sized fifth-wheel or class A bus. The engine itself can run off either gasoline or propane. This design is highly convenient for any type of camping based on your needs. Gasoline is cheaper but will not last a long time, meaning that you need to use it soon after getting it. Propane, on the other hand, will last you far longer, but it is more expensive to buy upfront. The engine can utilize either synthetic oil or conventional oil, depending on what you have access to.
Much like the previous entry, this generator has multiple plugs. This machine is a 50 amp generator and, as such, has the 50 amp plug to go along with it. The 50 amp is good for any number of the larger RVs out there. There is also the standard 30 amp that should fit the ranges below the 50 amp. There are also two 120v 20 amp standards that you could use for things like power tools and construction equipment when you aren't using it to power your trailer.
What is it made from?
So like the generator before it, the Westinghouse WGen9500DF Dual Fuel Portable Generator-9500 is made from metal. This construction makes it durable during storms on camping trips, where things might get a little rough. No reference to what the windings are made out of in this model, but it does state that it was tested at the factory where it was made. I think this is because they want you to know that it is reliable and that the gas smell that may be present was for testing purposes and is not a leak.
This generator has a top of the line control board with all of the bells and whistles that you would expect from a generator like this. It has the quick-start button and the voltage meter that you would expect. It has that handy fuel meeter that allows it to tell you how much fuel it has left and allowed you to anticipate when you will have to refill it. The generator even comes with a key fob that lets you start the generator remotely.
Weighing in at two-hundred and twenty pounds means that this generator can hardly be toted around easily around the campground. It is lighter than some, but it is still the weight of a full-grown person. In response to this, the generator has built-in wheels to make moving it more convenient.
